    Hey Max,

Yes - this is just about there; just not sure about the characterisation of the surgeon; you've got her smiling after she's killed the child, which suggests she likes killing children, when really, she's just horribly ambitious and cold; I don't think she's a smiling serial killer. You've got the actress Tilda Swinton on your influence map, and I think she's the perfect choice; cool, intelligent, hard - but not a 'murderess' in a self-aware or contented way. The children are just 'by-products' of her ambition - nothing more. Also - I don't think you need to have her keeping a ribbon (why would she? She's not sentimentally attached to her victims - their biological waste). As long as you clearly show that the child victim has ribbons in her hair, when the audience sees it again, they will make the connection.

In terms of fleshing out your character's ambitions - you could use information on the walls of her lab - 'Top Brain Surgeon Wins Research Grant' - or similar - so her backstory and brilliance is conveyed without taking up any additional duration. Also, I think you need to show the passing of time between the burial of the child and the plant attack. You could show her falling asleep at her desk - and then being startled awake or similar, and so Act 3 begins. I also suggest, that in terms of the ending, having her pulled down into the wet earth and swallowed up would be a nicely filmic and fitting end:

check out the end sequence of Friday the 13th Part 9 - Jason Goes to Hell (no, really)

Regarding your essay - you should pay particular attention to the movies next week; it's clear too that you understand the importance of establishing the proper context for 'cinema verite' before applying that understanding to Cloverfield. You'll need the Blair Witch Project as part of that movie's context too.
